Finally got around to watching Doctor Strangelove last night, years after my journal subtitle first referenced the film.

It is surely one of the best movies of all time, even 40 years later and with much of its subtle menace blunted by the end of the Cold War. Global nuclear holocaust was never so farcical and filled with rampant sexual metaphor. Well, it might have been, had it occured. The sure, if unintended, crowning humourous glory of the film is the disclaimer beforehand stating the position of the USAF that the film scenario that enabled one mad Air Force general to set off a nuclear war as the culmination of the massive conspiracy theory to explain his impotence, could not actually occur. That had me snickering.

Peter Sellers is great in all of his roles (he has three), and the movie is scattered with brilliant lines form all sides, from the lunatic General Ripper's sincere statement of his beliefs, to the ineffectual President Muffley's stammering apology to the Russians, to Dr. Strangelove's lunatic glee as he lays out the plan for society surviving the detonation of the Russian Doomsday Machine in mine shafts....or even has he speaks the title line. Gold. Pure gold, I tells ya. See it if you can, though you might need a sense of humour as warped as mine to have it appeal to you.

Today is a grey, blustery, rainy day. Perfect to sit at home and read. Now if only Canada Post would hurry the fuck up and get me my book. :P On the bright side, if I don't get it by 6 there's apparently a refund. I've gone into full-on pathetic fanboy mode already. Pacing and staring out windows and twitching at the sounds of passing traffic - it could be the mail truck, really, it could!

Begin spoiler-temptation-o-matic...locked on subject, Chigbo.
If you get absolutely desperate, there's already a detailed plot synopsis on Wikipedia. I can't vouch for its accuracy, but I don't doubt that ther're enough lunatics site contributors who've already finished the book.

I was hoping to go to the Whyte Ave Chapters for the 12:01 launch, not because I have any interest in reading the book, or that Henry (who works there, you might recall) was the resident employee cosplayer, but I was just sorta hoping to mull around the crowds alternating between bellowing "I CAN'T BELIEVE HERMIONE/SNAPE/MALFAY/VOLTEMORT/RON DIES!!!!!!" and nattering on about how much better the His Dark Materials series is.

Ahh well. Had I done that yesterday I would have had to incur the wrath of you today, so it's probably just as well.

I've already finished it. So do your worst. :P As it happens, I do think that His Dark Materials is just as good. Rather like comparing apples to oranges, really.
