The Government You Deserve

Damn it, America, if you had to elect a Republican, why couldn't you have picked this one?

Granted, Senator McCain's "thank you, sir, may I have another smear campaign?" act during the 2004 election was fucking shameful, but something like this puts him well on the way to making up that excess of loyalty to an undeserving administration. If the Senate vote on this anti-torture amendment is any indication of how the House will vote, he has all the votes he need to override Bush's threatened veto (incidentally, this would be the first bill Bush has vetoed in five years of his presidency. Think about that for a moment.)

By sticking this on to every Senate bill he can, he and his allies will force the House and the President to consider it or else bring the business of the nation to a screeching halt. At least somebody in the Republican party understands that the War on Terror is, at its heart, a war for hearts and minds. There will be no profit for America if it makes ten new enemies for every one it kills, and even less if it wins its war but loses its soul. The first step is necessarily to work to correct America's image in the eyes of the rest of the world, and this is, with any luck, a way to start doing it.

Ooops. My cynicism is dropping below optimal levels. I'd better go read some more Transmet before bed. Who knows what could happen if I had faith in the world?

I have read the story you're talking about, and while I do believe it, and do believe that the administration has knowingly and deliberately tortured its captives, I'm really hoping to see it corroborated somewhere.

I don't share your opinion that this decline in the world's opinion of America is irreversible - only that the current government doesn't seem to want to reverse it. Really, if it _is_ irreversible, then we're looking at the start of another "Fall of the Roman Empire" situation. Remember the last time that happened?

Romans not withstanding, I don't really know of many countries interested in taking on the U.S. Gosh, I wonder why. Anyway, I'm just dropping by to say that the job still sucks, politics are a dirty business, etc. Kethry

Here here on all counts. McCain and Powell are the only respectable republicans, IMO

I've been reading about the eastern european "black site" interrogation zones operated by the cia, and this only adds to the helpless rage I feel towards high government in the United States. That's HORRible.
