Syriana is an excellent movie, and I demand that you go see it immediately.

Yes, you.

If any of you ever saw Traffic, you know what to compare this too. It's an easy parallel to draw, since they had the same writerr, but this is the oil industry's Traffic - a brutal, uncompromising look at the den of vipers that is the trade in the world's fuel. It's hard to say this is a new story - most people interested in this sort of movie already know the degree that modern civilization depends on petroleum, and the things this dependence inspires the powerful to do.

But Syriana takes so many disparate stories - the idealistic desert prince seeking a better future for his country, the world-weary spy only trying to do his job and getting screwed over, the impoverished teenager who's led by his stomach into a terrorist training camp, the Houston oil fat cats and their lawyers trying to evade the consequences of their bribes and make their bucks....and ties them all together into a cohesive whole that shows, even by sheer contrast, the power of black gold, and all the lives it twists in its pursuit. It can be difficult to keep track of all the players and all the twists and turns, but I wholeheartedly recommend it - the ending is climactic enough even if you don't, but it grows infinitely more powerful if all that leads up to it is understood.

I want to tell a story like this. I want to draw people in, and hear their gasps of realisation as they understand where I have been taking them all this time. I want to be a weaver of words - if I have one ambition in life, that is it. Now if only I had more time to pursue it. Somehow.

I'm going to see this movie today with a friend.

I will be so disappointed if it doesn't live up to your praise. You've built up my expectations!
