Hail Necessity, full of grace...

...blessed art thou amongst concepts, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Invention.

So I said to myself this weekend, "Self, you are out of the really easy foods to cook, and you can't buy any more right now, but you do have a lot of ingredients. Cooking rice or pasta is really just boiling water. Is there any reason you couldn't do that in the microwave?"

The answer would appear to be - no, there isn't. And it actually turned out pretty well, all things considered. This was probably obvious to some of you...okay, most of you. But I always deferred to my mother in the kitchen, and she taught me, by example if nothing else, that microwaves were oinly good for defrosting, reheating, and occasional "make this hot really quickly" chores. :)

I can feel the return of proper carbohydrates to my diet. If I can figure out the proper timings to cook meat in there, I will have it made. Well, not really. But my grocery bills will go a hell of a lot farther if I can replace at least some of those expensive prepackaged meals (the ramen, I'm sure, will never really go away) with some self-cooking. And I'll learn more at that.

So school is crashing rapidly to an end. Still no news on my job search, but we'll keep plugging away and see what happens. I got my History term paper back - grade is a B. I'm of mixed feelings about that, because I think I could have gotten a lot better grade. I get the impression from my feedback that Dr. Pavlovic had mostly stylistic problems with my paper. So be it.

Heading in for my last History class this morning...well, really just to pick up a copy of some notes I was missing from the girl who sits next to me...and then coming back. Now that I actually have a plan for my Foreign Policy paper, I want to finish it tonight and/or tomorrow afternoon, so I can raid Molten Core Tuesday evening instead of working like a dog.

Good to see I have my priorities straight and all. :D

You can do potatoes in the microwave too. Just pierce an unpeeled potato with a fork and cook for... well, i think its about 7 minutes (you might want to google it.)

Meat only takes ~5-7 minutes, depending on thickness and if you have sauce and stuff in there with it.

Frozen vegetables in a bowl with a little bit of water and a cover (or not, whichever) for ~2 minutes is good too. Add a little butter/margarine and salt... Mmm.

Eeexcellent. Though my wacky electrical system may change those figures a bit. We'll have to see.

Many thanks!

Carbs int he diet
I know that a large number of people dis this, but instant oatmeal is really quite good done in a microwave. I buy the large boxes of Safeway Instant Oatmeal variety. Then I mix 3 different flavours of packets together in one bowl (except for "Cinnamon and Spice" because I can't stand the taste), put a plastic measuring cup with 1 Cup of water in it into the microwave, nuke for 3 minutes (to get it boiling well), pour it over the oatmeal, mix, let it sit for about 5 minutes, then dig in for some ribsticking goodness.

If you're going to be boiling water for 2 cups worth of stuff, it'll take 5 minutes.

And I hate that you can do Molten Core. I'm just a squishie at level 39, and managed to die twice on Saturday in SFK. 3 things to remember: 1. Level 17 rogues have a hellaciously high aggro range when compared to level 20 - 23 Elites. 2. If you want the priest to heal you, don't go running into the stack of mobs around the corner. Especially if they cast "Screams of the Past". One of these days, I'm just going to sit where I'm safe and heal those in range instead of coming to you and switching the horde of mobs' aggro to me. 3. Part of "Pull the mobs" is "Pull the mobs then run back to us incase more come running". It doesn't mean "Stand there and force the rest of us to come to you and get snotted by the KS mob aroundthe corner". ::sigh::

Re: Carbs int he diet
Thanks very much!

Boo on your suicidal rogue buddy. I've been known to try and play ghetto tank on my Hunter, but I'm in mail and all the real tanks are busy. Leather? Ech.

Meet worldofwarcraft, by the way. For all your ranting needs.

Ah yes, the microwave! It is quite the ingenious invention, no? Me thinks if it can't be nuked, then it is not worth eating. I might be alone on that, though.

Never cooked meat in one myself. Not sure how that would turn out. But I've radiated myself a couple o' eggs...turned out nice and fluffy, and no need for a skillet!

Good luck with you culinary adventures. I have nothing more to offer. :D

*gape* You do MC? And you're in a guild where being there Tuesday night is an option instead of a requirement? I... am just bowled over. How is that even possible? I've never even heard of a raid-caliber guild that isn't a bunch of strict asshats.

Also, microwave cooking can work out fairly well (if you're really interested, nab a cookbook on the subject - it'll help more than trial and error ever will), but I've always found traditional cooking to be no harder, with the exception of a little more clean up time. I like having more control over the food as it cooks. My sister does a lot of microwave work, and it seems to work out for her just fine.

Isn't actually my guild doing it, as we don't have enough 60s yet - we have trouble fielding 20 for ZG, even. But one of my guildmates recruited me to fill out space in her husband's guild's newly-starting raid. As it happens, these guys aren't asshats either, in my experience. So it promises to be fun.

Or not
It sounds like it could be fun.

Course, you haven't managed to get onto the Twisting Nether server for 4 months (don't worry, Hailey's now at 2 months and Mike's at 29 days). And given what's happening to their servers (crashing all over the place), it's unlikely that you'd be getting on.

And here I am with Cooking 300, Fishing 230 (just completed the Artisan Fishing quest this afternoon [and making lots of spare cash pulling up all those Ironbound and Mithrilbound trunks and chests, then either selling the contents or making things from them]), Tailoring 229 and Enchanting 209. Gots no idea what my First Aid is, but I know that it's still only in double digits. :)

Bah
Go spoil yourself and get a hotplate, griddle, George Foreman something-or-other... heck, even an electric frying pan. It's so worth it.

Re: Bah
I plan to, once I have actual money again.

This is currently scheduled after the closing ceremonies of the Hades Winter Olympics.
