Unhappy Endings

Robert Barrington Leigh found dead in the river.

He vanished last Sunday night on his way to meet friends at the Folk Fest, and his family had been searching for him since then. I'm no coroner or cop, but my guess is that his bike just caught the wrong bit of one of those river valley paths and went over.

I went to junior high with him, though we never really knew each other aside from names on math contest results. As a consequence, I don't really have that much to say about him, except that he was really quiet, generally inoffensive, and frankly, a genius even then. Definitely better at math than me. He loved it, I was merely good at it.

The world is poorer for his loss.

He was in kaz's math class at Old Scona. According to husband, he was a very nice kid, and as bright as you said -- always eager to come up with an answer, even if it was the "other" Robert actually being called on. (Not that my Robert ever complained about that.)

I've been following the case since I saw a missing poster for him and recognised his name from husband's school reminiscences. I agree with you about what likely happened, though I imagine there will be further reports to correct us if we're wrong.

I feel so bad for his family and his girlfriend. I just can't imagine, and frankly don't want to.

In times like these, the universe seems so mean and arbitrary, doesn't it?

To say the very least.

It's so jarring to hear about my contemporaries dying, just like when Yi was hit by that car last year. This is not supposed to happen to us, damn it. We're supposed to live long and fulfilling lives and speak our parents' eulogies. Not die in random bullshit accidents at the height of our potential.

Sigh. I should sleep.

Went to the vigil tonight, 150+ showed up, many many old classmates, it was nice of everyone. The family is holding up well all things considered.

I wish I'd been able to make it.
