Famous last words...

In retrospect, I have just done something really, really ill-advised. :D

The deposit I mentioned earlier today was a $2000 disability grant as part of my student funding (a part that it is thankfully not necessary to repay).

After, with any luck, resolving the difficulties keeping the remaining $5500 from being issued, I went downtown (my bank has a branch in City Centre Mall) to deposit it, as well as the cheque from my sister's college fund (that was, perplexingly, made out to my mother instead of my sister, and mailed here instead of to New York. Whatever.)

Having talked to Memory Express on my way out (yay for mobile phone), they confirmed that, while two of the three items I ordered last week were in stock, the third was not.

In a spectacular example of customer service, rather than tell me this right away as might be expected, they decided to wait a week for me to email them to ask, "Hey, guys, what's up with this?". No doubt they wanted to make me feel powerful and important by leaping to my beck and call.

So I told them they could send what they had, and I'd buy the third later or from somebody else.

There is also, as it happens, a Radio Shack The Source By Circuit City (*snicker*) in City Centre, so I figured I could just go pick up the third item from there. And that's when my brain uttered the fatal sentence that begins with, "And while we're in Circuit City, we can..."

And that's how I became the not-quite-so-proud owner of a shiny new 30GB Creative Zen Vision M.

Goddamn it.

What media player do you use on your desktop, then? While I do like iTunes, getting it to play nicely with the thing (as in, preserve my fucking ID3 tags, or export playlists in a usable format) is turning into more of a nightmare than even I had anticipated.

I would have bought an iPod, but I heard the things liked to fall apart approximately one day after the warranty expired. I thought this was a bad thing.

Well, generally, I don't keep many MP3s on my machine, but when I do, I just use WinAmp. Therefore the default Creative media loader is good enough for me (especially since I tend to load a lot of videos on it and it autoconverts them if the codec won't play nicely with the player).

There are a few 3rd party alternatives which I've dug up. I'll see if I can find 'em tonight for you.

Nothing, so far, except the fact that I really should not have bought it. :D
