I hope all you Americans on my list went out and voted today. Don't make me glare at you. I've got the crazy eyes, you know.

I am so supposed to be doing research for my Canadian Politics paper due Friday (or my Religious Studies and American Politics papers due next week), but I knew that wasn't going to happen.

What I didn't know was that I wasn't going to get to fucking sleep.

The Democrats look to have the House well in hand, but the Senate is going to come down to two razor-thin Senate races in Missouri (catrionnarain? Any news?) and Virginia, that they need to take to gain a one-seat majority.

Looks like it will be a while before we find out about Senate; there will probably have to recounts.

I'm very, very pleased about the House, though. This will shake things up a bit. Hooray!

Yeah, it's a good time to be an electoral lawyer. Did you know they swarm just like bees? If you listen real closely, you can hear them.

To be honest, I'm not sure how much a one-seat difference matters. Please correct me if my understanding of the American system is a bit off, but as I understand it they don't have the same kind of rigid vote-along-party-lines-or-the-party-whip-will-eat-your-soul-and-s***-on-your-career kind of setup. The individual senators have a bit more freedom to vote however they chose.

If that's the case, then whether or not the Democrats have "control," the Republicans will simply have a more difficult time getting any controversial legistlation through because there are less people in the Senate who share their way of thinking.

Am I making any sense here?

Yes and no. Yes, it doesn't mean as much as it does here because party discipline isn't so ludicrous there. On the other hand, the majority party has a lot of influence because they run the committees, they determine the legislative agenda and decide which bills even get discussed and voted on, et cetera, et cetera.
