Feliz Navidad!

I'd like to wish everyone reading a Merry Christmas. If you don't celebrate Christmas, substitute any timely example of well-wishing in its place. Thank you, drive through.

To a large extent, mere presence was our family's present to each other this year. Ever the one to buck trends, I bought my mother a CD she'd wanted as a small surprise, and had Ral sign the card to make it from both of us. It seems to have gone over well.

Still, it's not the presents or the trappings that matter. It's not even the historical implausibility that has attached itself to the pre-existing celebration of this time of year. It's the sentiment of renewal and family feeling, sentiments I wish upon you all.

Merry Christmas!

Make sure to do / see something quintessentially NY while you're in town!

Aside from "get stuck in ridiculous traffic while leaving the city", I don't like the odds. I'm not so much of a tourist to have much that I want to do enough to overcome the galactic-level inconvenience involved in actually doing it without much of a travel budget. :D

And a belated Happy Winter-een-mas to you!

You know, I've been reading your LJ (sitting here at work on Dec 28th) and I was considering reactivating my EVE aubscription (as I could never find anyone to play with), thinking you might enjoy the company (and even still might) when I got the following in my in-box:

Subject: Welcome to Vanguard Beta!

Dear wkatzell@telusplanet.net,

We are delighted to extend this invitation to you to participate in the Vanguard: Saga of Heroes Closed Beta Phase 4. Below are the instructions needed to get you started on a path towards Telon. We have made the process as painless as possible.

This is going to make my time until the street dates of WoW:TBC and Vanguard:SOH much more enjoyable.

Re: Gaming
Bah. Eve > all. I've kept up with more EVE news over my vacation than actual news. :D

Re: Gaming
Well, then, what server are you on, what race are you playing, and when can bob13 and I expect our guild invites when we join you in playing?

Re: Gaming
1) Only one server (well, 3, but one is for testing and one is China-only).

2) I'm playing Gallente.

3) I don't have invite power in the corp I'm in (Phoenix Wing, a Gallente Federation loyalist RP/PVP corp), but if you feel like role-playing a freedom-fighter of some stripe, I don't imagine you'd have too much trouble getting in. Though you might prefer to be a hearty space pirate, religious slaver, risk-taking trader, or any of a ton of other choices that don't even have to involve RP (though a prominent school of thought suggests that merely playing the game is RP in a sense). Look around the game's site (even the forums, heh) and see what appeals to you if you decide to try it out.

Re: Gaming
And what, if I may ask, is your Character's name? I mean, how are we to communicate with you when we get there (I'm reactivating my account, and mike is dloading the trail as we speak).

Re: Gaming
My character's name is Dallan Arethi. That said, I'll be out of game for another week (being in NY, and all), and, quite frankly, the game has a Matterhorn of a learning curve even with friends involved.

If you already have accounts on the Penny-Arcade, Something Awful, or Ars Technica forums, all three of those communities run excellent newbie corps (Merch Industrial, Goonfleet / The Greater Goon, and Ex Coelis (ArsT also runs Ars Caelestis, which has a good rep but is less aimed towards EVE noobs), respectively), which help a fair bit. Goonfleet especially, mainly because it involves its recruits in the interesting fringe-space warfare right off the bat, but I'll let Nathan testify about them should he feel so inclined.

Barring that, one can ask for help in the starter corp's or Rookie Help chat channel, the official newbie forum , or read either of these two offsite forum threads. Oh, and play the tutorial (this is mainly for Mike. :P). It's longish and bordering on tedium, but you'll be better off for it.

You'll also be better off for joining a good corporation - you _can_ solo in EVE, but it will bore you to tears long-term. If you don't feel like joining the one I'm in, there's a nice sticky post in the Alliances and Corporations Recruitment forum listing other RP corps, along with the rest of that forum and the recruitment channel ingame, for other corps in general.

That is all. I should seriously copy-paste this for future use.

Glad to hear it's going well. Miss you lots!

Miss you too, Cat. Hope you're resting well over the season. You've earned it.
