Go...East, Young Man

So it appears someone wants to make things simple for me. Who knew?

I got my answer from UBC, and it's no. Three weeks of agonising internal melodrama short-circuited in one short letter, and pushing me to the outcome I almost certainly should have chosen anyway.

So, upshot: I'm moving to Ottawa for this fall, barring some dramatically unforeseen circumstances (like, for example, Canada Post losing my reply - why in God's name can't you indicate your acceptance online?). I shall have to pump rumor_esq for information on the environs. And see about getting into residence so I don't have to worry as much about furniture. And a big pile of other such rigmarole.

But first - more papers!

Cool! I'm looking forward to hanging out and playing games and suchery. I have the goth bar cased out, and the movie theatres. There's a mall literally right next to campus, so that will probably be convenient if you live in rez. (Grocery store a *little* farther away, though.)

Also, there will be no pumping of me by you. Sicko.

What about me?

If you want D to pump you, I will not protest. I'm not even sure why I'm in the equation. :0

That's not what I meant, and you know it.

Don't sass me.

I don't mall-crawl much, TBH, and I don't see that changing. But it's good to know you've blazed a trail in general. Anything else I should know about surviving the capital?

Busses are much better than E-town, you'll be glad to hear. In fact, you can practically bus straight from anywhere downtown/campusish to the airport in 20 minutes for $3. It's pretty awesome. If you live on campus, you'll be close to the Market, which where all the good pubs and summer fresh fruit and veggie shopping is (and the goth club). Pubs are the thing in Ottawa - there's gaggles of them and they serve good food.

Uhm... lost of gaming stores? I dunno what else you're looking for. :P

A heads-up on the climate, mainly.

Well, the winters have been mild since I've arrived. Generally, it is much more humid than out west and overcast far more often. You may come to miss the sun. The humidity can be a bitch in the winter, but mostly I understand this because of what people have told me about the past. It hasn't really been an issue with the mild weather. It rains a lot, year round, though.

You will be happy to know that Ottawa has the most robust snow-cleaning budget in Canada. They literally start salting and plowing the moment the snow falls, every time it falls. Ottawa loves the salt. Your shoes and pants will not. But getting around is consequently not too difficult. As I mentioned before, too, there's a pretty good bus system.

Believe me, I'm as surprised as you are. It'd have been a tough choice too!

I've heard Ottawa is a gorgeous city (says my sister, and my Dad). And hey, it could be worse - you could be going to Toronto! Needless to say, I figure your social fears are unfounded - you'll make friends, especially once you meet people that like to create coherent arguments just as much as you do (and no doubt at least a FEW of your fellow law students will be complete nerds!) ;)

Good luck!

Thanks. Though it wasn't as much 'social fears" pushing me away from Ottawa as "I've missed these people for years AND they live in the closest Canada has to a Nirvana." pulling me towards Vancouver. So I suspect I'll be fine too.

After all, it isn't Toronto! :D

Now who am I going to harass when I move to Vancouver?
