Wicked Sick

So Tommy, in his inimitable style, told me that I wouldn't be allowed to leave town unless I'd gone to Fragapalooza this year. Despite his size, he can be pretty fucking scary at times. So I went.

And had a good time. Too bloody hot, to be sure, but I definitely enjoyed the atmosphere, and the ready availability of opponents for games of Supreme Commander and Unreal Tournament 2004, among other things. Plus, the sheer availability of data on the massive, massive network has to be seen to be believed - I didn't have enough HD space available to come out with much more than a couple of games The aformentioned UT2004, which I'll be keeping this time if only because I've finally found a way to connect to IP games - which is to say, my friends' games, which are the only ones I play because the online FPS community is full of assholes -Overlord, which is fun and creative, but I don't see it having much replay value, and it NEEDS A FUCKING MAP, and KOTOR II and NWN 2, which I haven't tried yet.

Tommy hooked us up with a hotel room, which was nice - being able to sleep in a bed and actually shower made the whole occasion even better. If I'd had it to do over again I'd have brought more food/drink, since it was available either at ridiculous prices or ridiculous (for me, anyway) distances, but I was testing the capacity of my backpack as it stood.

It would appear, though, that Tommy is some sort of talisman for the prize-awarding Gods. We all know the story of spaz_own_joo leaving early and missing out on a new video card, but, having learned his lesson (and, to be fair, because my ride was running late - thanks, Mom! :D), my name came up on the...second-last draw of this evening, and I came away with a new quad-core Intel Core 2 Extreme QX7600 processor. Which I can't use, because my machine is a laptop, and I can't afford to build a new machine around. I'd love to use it, but I may just have to find a way to sell it or otherwise give it a good home.

I just hope my shocked exclamation when I saw my nick on the screen made it onto some recording somewhere. In entirely unrelated news, I may have a profanity problem.

Good plan, and I'd have thought of it myself, but I seriously don't plan for an upgrade for 2-3 years, especially given that I bought this particular laptop specifically _as_ a desktop replacement (mainly so that I could go to LANs like, ironically, this one). By the time I want to spend any amount of money for a new system, this will be midrange at best.

The only thing I'd currently use a desktop for is as a file server, and using one of these in a file server is clearly some sort of offense against the gods of computing. :)

If you're looking for opponents for Supreme Commander, Jon usually plays a game with some UK-based friends on Sundays (usually in the afternoon - maybe starting around 1-ish our time). He'd also most likely be up for a game during the week as well (the time difference with the UK makes it impossible for him to play with people in the UK in the evening).

You mentioned that the last time I posted about SC, as I recall. So helpful of you - do you happen to have an unattached younger sister? :)

I have his MSN info, at least - maybe I'll prod him again.

Woah, congrats, C! I've been tempted to go to Frag for awhile now, not so much for the gaming, but rather for the obsene amount of piracy I could partake in.

Haaay, I don't suppose that's a socket 939 processor, eh? :V

Socket T/LGA 775, sorry. :P

And go, I implore you. I might even fly back from the East specifically to go next year. We'll see how finances look.

OK, by then, those 1TB hard drives will have come down in price and we'll have a "who can grab the most pr0n off schmucks' computars" contest :D

Glad you had fun! I sort-of wanted to go, but esspecially considering the oddly shifted travel plans, 3d days of gaming on the tail end of a long trip [sans girlfriend] is hardly ideal ;)

Kudos on the prize though! Quad-cores are frigg'n 1337, though we use them for rendering not gaming. For what you use, I'd probally sell it or such: you could build an awesome desktop, but your laptop will perform about the same for basic gaming / standard operation.

Re: Nifty
That and the fight you had with their registration app, no doubt. But I blame you for neither.

Yes, I came to pretty much the same conclusion you did. It _is_ a shame, though.

Re: Nifty
Or you could just take up rendering [or other distributed rendering] as a hobby ;)

Pardon the lack of login for the first post... LJ apparently hates me :P

A former coworker of mine was quite the Frag Freak, keeping a countdown on the whiteboard from about the 100-day mark. It sounds fun, though. Too bad my FPS skills are naught. Was NetHack represented at all?

Heh, no Nethack server as far as I knew, though with the number of people there there could well have been one I hadn't heard of. :)

That said, there was plenty of RTS and other multiplayer game action going on, so even if you suck at UT or Quake or whatever, still fun to be had.

Awesome. It sounds like a lot of fun. I think I might go next year.

Now I just have to pick some game and learn how to play it. (Since the only game I've ever acquitted myself in is NetHack, and that's due to perseverance rather than skill.)
