Your Fault: Core Dumped

So, as you'll know given the slightest bit of attention to news in Ottawa, the Goddamned Bus Strike is finally ending. Service starts up a week from today.. There's an interesting little process piece from the Citizen about how various MPs organised a consensus on the issue - though maybe it's only interesting if you're a political junkie like me.

I need to throw a party or something to celebrate it (also, Family Day long weekend/housewarming/whateverthefuck reasons).  Watch this space - or the various spaces that have windows on this space.

I've been relatively silent about my life since the New Year, I know. Wasn't deliberate, it just sort of happened. I'd resolved to get out more and meet more people in town (along with "exercise more" and other such cliches): actually made more progress on the first of these than I had expected given the whole "transit strike" thing. I can only thank Renee and Rhea (and Natasha, for that matter, but she's been out of town lately when she hasn't been busy at the hospital) for not having a problem with giving the occasional ride. I shall have to figure out a way to make things even.

My January class was somewhat demanding (mostly because it was about 80-90% in French as opposed to the fifty-ish that I expected, and my French is far from good enough to assimilate legal concepts in), but I'll definitely try and get back in the habit of writing here again.  Anyway, that's over and done with, winter classes are starting and I've submitted my applications for law firm summer recruitment in Ottawa. First shot in the job search: let's hope it sucks less than last year. I'm looking at picking up Rosetta Stone or something like that, just to try and improve my French while working around my class schedule. Any thoughts?

Visited the family last night for the first time in a month-ish, which was enjoyable: it turned out that my sister got me The Dark Knight and Wanted on DVD for Christmas. (Admittedly, I wouldn't have picked Wanted myself, but She gave it to me late because of various strike-related logistics hassles, it's always been the thought that counts. We also got to talk: about the car they're planning to buy, about her continuing jealousy at the sheer number of our age cohort that are tying the knot (many of whom even should!), and so on, and so forth. Also, got buried in home-cooked food again. Score. :)

Anyway, I'm back and I've caught you all up, so now I'm ready to continue my ongoing hate affair with February. But for now I'm going to take the sole advantage to be found in this ridiculous midday break I have Monday/Wednesday and go take a nap.

I heard Rosetta Stone was balls - basically a vastly overpriced set of flash cards with oral voice recognition. Are you a CBA member? They run a "French Without Tears" program that I've heard is good. Being in Ottawa, though, there's no shortage of FLT programs...

Yeah, no shortage of FLT in town. The appeal of a vastly overpriced set of flash cards is the flexible scheduling - if class or work is kicking my ass, I don't suffer extra for it.

I'm thinking there's got to be better resources out there than Rosetta Stone, for the dollar spent. Unless you were just going to torrent Rosetta Stone, of course.

Hey, one good way to work on french is just to speak it in other non-stressed contexts. We could meet up and chat in french for a while, possibly over board games if you would be interested. I need to practice my own french for employment reasons.

Best of luck with the job hunt.

I like this idea. But we hardly need to find excuses/reasons to hang out: just let me know whenever you're up to it.

True, though I have a government job while you have law school + a girlfriend. Let me know when you have some free time once the buses are rolling. :)

One of these is actually no longer true. :| But I'll be in touch.

Damn, sorry there. Either way, your life is far busier then mine.
